In a letter to his sister Wilhemina, Van Gogh wrote, "Often it seems to me the night is even more richly coloured than day." In this night painting the sky is Prussian Blue, Ultramarine & Cobalt, with sparkling yellow gaslights and stars. The place depicted is Arles close to the Yellow House he famously rented.
