What is the water-based alkyd resin binder used in Aqyla?

Alkyd resin is a synthetic resin that hardens by reacting with oxygen in the air and is widely used in oil paints and mediums. The water soluble alkyd resin developed for Aqyla is made by emulsifying alkyd resin in water and dissolving it in water. For this reason, Aqyla slowly becomes water resistant over three weeks as the water evaporates. The final paint film will be oil based, so Aqyla can be used with oil paints.

How is it possible to use water based Aqyla with Oil Paints?

As the water in Aqyla evaporates it leaves behind pigment and the oil based alkyd resin binder which is similar to oil paint. As the final paint layer is oil based there are no problems with adhesion, cracking or separation.

How do I use Aqyla with oil paints?

It is best to paint in layers, rather than mixing oils and Aqyla. For example, Aqyla can be used as a quick drying base coat, for fine details on top of oil colour, or to provide matte colour where required. It is best to wait the 30 minutes or so, for the surface of Aqyla to dry before layering oil on top. Aqyla can be applied to 'wet' oil without a problem.

Can I mix Aqyla with oil paint?

It is possible to mix Aqyla and oil paint; however, this will change the workable nature of the paint and you need to work quite quickly. It is best to fully use the advantages of both Aqyla and oils by using differnt layers to achive the result you are after.

Can I use the Aqyla mediums with oils paints?

Yes with the exception of applying Aqyla on top of oil when it has been mixed with the rapid medium. The modelling paste will also take approximately two weeks to adhere to an oil based surface.

Will the oil in Aqyla damage paper like oil paints?

Aqyla is safe to use on paper. The oil will not bleed through or cause the paper to deteriorate. No special treatment of the paper is necessary other than to choose a appropriate weight of paper suitable for your project.

When should I apply the Aqyla topcoat?

The topcoat is best applied after Aqyla is totally dry (approximately 3 weeks). This will allow you to remove the topcoat at a later date using just water.

What are the best brushes for Aqyla?

Any brushes you would normally use for acrylics or oils will be suitable for Aqyla. Washing brushes soon after use is recommended. However, you can still rescue brushes the next day by soaking them in soapy water. Aqyla becomes difficult to dissolve in water after 2 to 3 days.

Can I airbrush Aqyla.

You can us an airbrush with Aqyla except with Pearl Gold, Pearl Silver, and Pearl Bronze. These three colours have large pigment particles that can clog the nozzle.

Does Aqyla dry slower than acrylic paint?

Yes. Aqyla takes about 30 minutes for the surface to dry. As expected, you will notice a changes in the workability of the paint during this 30 minutes. However, the painting experience is definately less rushed. After the initial 30 minutes, it will take approximately 3 weeks for Aqyla to become completely water resistant.

Does Aqyla go 'tacky' like acrylic paint?

Aqyla does not form a tacky surface. Rather the workabilty of the paint changes as the surface dries.

Can Aqyla be used with waterbased paints?

Yes, Aqyla can be layered on top of waterbased paints such as acrylic or watercolours. It is not recommended to use acrylic or watercolour over the top of Aqyla due to its oil based paint film.

How delicate is Aqyla?

Aqyla has a strong paint film that is superior to that of lacquer in terms of scratch resistance. Aqyla also has excellent adhesion properties allowing you to paint on multiple surfaces such as paper, canvas, wood, fabric, glass, metal and some plastics.

Will Aqyla crack?

Aqyla will not cause cracks even if applied thickly. However, if you add powder or sand-like substances to a thick layer, there is a risk of cracking.
